The University of Hertfordshire is a modern university located in Hertfordshire, England, from which the university takes its name. It has more than 23,000 students. It became Hatfield Polytechnic in 1967. With the passage of the Higher Education Act in 1992, the institution gained university status and became an institution inspected by the provincial council rather than being self-governing.
