The University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) is one of Australia's most prestigious research universities and a member of the Group of Eight (Go8). The Bachelor of Aviation (Flying) program offers students both a university undergraduate degree and professional pilot training. Theoretical courses take place at UNSW Kensington Campus, and flight training takes place at Bankstown Airport Flying Operations Unit (FOU) facilities. It is ranked as the number 1 university in Australia and one of the top 20 universities in the world (19th place) in the QS World University Rankings 2027.
The program is carried out in accordance with CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) standards and prepares students for a commercial airline pilot career.
Application and School Start Dates
Starting Period
Bachelor of Aviation (Flying) program is only available in Term It accepts students for 1 semester. There is no second starting period during the year.
Application Dates
Applications for international students are evaluated with the Grouped Offer Rounds system. Completed application deadlines and offer dates for each term are announced by UNSW. For example, the last application round (Grouped Round 5) application deadline for Term 1 2027 is 30 July 2026, the announcement of offers is 10 September 2026, and the offer acceptance deadline is 1 October 2026.
All candidates applying to the program must successfully complete the Aviation Aptitude Admissions Test (AAT) exam.
The application process is as follows. proceeds:
Application for the Bachelor of Aviation (Flying) program is made.
AAT application form is completed.
The university sends payment link to eligible candidates.
AAT fee is paid (A$55, non-refundable).
Candidate's access to the exam is opened.
The exam must be completed within 2 weeks after access is granted.
Results are available from the completion of the exam. It will be announced in approximately 2 weeks.
Exam Dates
UNSW does not publish a fixed exam date for the AAT.
According to the latest guidance published by the university for international students, it is recommended that the AAT registration process be completed by 2 July 2026 for Term 1 2027 applications. This leaves enough time for the candidate to complete the exam and for the results to be announced before the last round of offers.
What Happens If You Fail?
The candidate who cannot pass the AAT exam will not be accepted to the program.
The university does not share a publicly available threshold score.
If the candidate re-applies, he/she must complete the current application process and the AAT evaluation again.
Preparation Program
UNSW does not have a separate Foundation program for the piloting program.
Students whose English level or academic proficiency is not sufficient for direct admission can transfer to undergraduate education through the UNSW College Foundation Program or Diploma Programme.

Meet the university's international student admission requirements
Maths background recommended.
Language Requirement
International students must meet one of the following English proficiency:
IELTS Academic: At least 6.5 (no band should be below 6.0)
TOEFL iBT: At least 90 (Writing minimum 23, other departments minimum 22)
PTE Academic: At least 64 (no communication skill should be below 54)
Cambridge English (CAE/C1 Advanced): At least 176
-Candidates who cannot meet the requirements can re-apply in the next admission period after completing their deficiencies.
